Should the legal age to create a Facebook account be reduced to under 13?

The issue we will discuss is whether or not children under the age of 13 should be able to have their own Facebook account. At the moment, Facebook requires everyone to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account.

Key words/phrases that may help with your discussion include:

  • Cyber bulling
  • Safety online
  • Interaction online
  • Emotional pressure
  • Social scrutiny
  • True identity of others
  • Keeping up to date with people
  • Being able to share experiences
  • Finding lost friends/family members

What are other people’s views? What are the counterarguments to your views? This will all inform your ‘Chance to Shine’ discussion that you will construct this week.

Remember:

  • Elaborate on your views
  • Show recognition of differing views
  • QUESTION other people’s views if they’re not clear or detailed enough!

  1. Bradley says:

Yes I think it should be reduced to under 13 but the children must have parental permission so the children don’t be a bully or get bullied.

    • amy patterson says:

I don’t think it should be 13 I think it should be 16 because any one can post inappropriate images and #allsorts

  2. Luke E says:

Yes because children already use Facebook under the age of 13. They lie about their age, or have a parent or friend set them up the account. I think the age should be lowered, but there should also be limits placed on it. They should only be allowed to view other 13 year old children. I also think there should be a way to tap into the actual age, like using the last four digits of the social security.

  3. Elyse says:

I think it should be lowered so then children can experience online interactivity and will know how to react if there is an another situation in life on the internet.

  4. Jade says:

I think that the age should be lowered because most responsible parents have taught their children how to be safe on the internet as well as how to report exposing comments and pictures. I also think that parents should know their children enough to know when they are mature enough to have an account.

    • Mrs Tyrer says:

Have all parents taught their children to be safe? How can you be sure?

      • Jade says:

You can’t be but it is common sense to teach you children to cross the road safely so, theoretically speaking, it is also common sense to teach the younger generation how to be safe on the internet and the younger generation growing up with the internet as well so it is even more important. On the other hand, if parents are supervising their children whilst they are on the likes of Facebook and other social media websites they can teach their child whilst their child is on social media, this can also prevent graphic images being seen by children as the parents are often the first people to spot new comments and images.

    • Holly says:

I understand Jade but have parents taught their children to be safe on the Internet

    • Tabitha says:

Shannon and Tabitha think all adults should but not many do.

      • Mrs Tyrer says:

How could we change this? How can we ensure children are safe online? What can parents do?

  5. Tabitha says:

Shannon and Tabitha think it should be lowered to 11 so people can learn the responsibility of using the internet also they can either chat or play online games with friends and family all over the world

  6. Ally says:

Yes I think that it should be lowered or parental permission should be required because children can then have facebook and not get bullied because their parents will be looking over them at all times.

  7. Holly says:

I don’t think that children under 13 should be allowed to use accounts / Facebook on the internet because cyber bullying
and people posting rude pictures for small children to see

    • Ally says:

But if parents supervise their children and they come across this they could do something about it as soon as possible

  8. Elyse says:

I think the age for facebook should be lowered so then children can talk to their family or friends across the world that they don’t see often. Also they get to play games online with their family and friends.

  9. Jodie says:

We think the legal age to create a Facebook account should be reduced to at least 10 but it should also be made safer for kids. Games are available for children to play on Facebook so that could be something for kids to do on Facebook. Kids can contact people around the world [ that they know ].On the other hand children on Facebook can make new friends. Its a great way for children to communicate rather than staying on video games all day.

    • Ally says:

That’s right because if they have families that have moved away can now contact them quickly

  10. Luke E says:

Yes because children have the right to talk to their friends online

  11. Callum says:

I think the legal age for facebook should be lowerd due to how many people under the age of 13 use it

  12. Bradley says:

I think the age should not be reduced because if a 9 year old has an account they might get bullied by other young children and the child who gets bullied will start bullying everyone else (which is not good).

  13. Elyse says:

    By Erin
I think the age should be lowered so then parents and children can grow trust with each other but the children need to know that they should not talk or meet up people and if so there will be consequences , however the children can learn from them.

  14. Callum says:

    matas says
I think that the age for Facebook should be lowered because children under 13 use it to get in contact with family ,friends and games.

  15. Holly says:

I think it should be reduced because you are able to talk to family members that are far away and I have a brother in Germany and its the only contact with him

  16. William says:

Parents want to keep an eye on their kids. When they go on facebook, they should get their passwords first so they can check what they do on it.

  17. Abbey says:

I think the age should be lowered because you can be trusted to walk home on your own so why can you not be trusted to be on face book just to go on the games and talk to your friends and family

  18. Rosalinda says:

We think that the government have to much hold over children. So parents should have more say in what their children do and when they do it until they are 18.

  19. Elyse says:

I don’t think the Facebook age should be lowered because no one knows what kind of people are on the other side of the computer and your family such as Mom and Dad can’t help you unless you tell them if something has been said.

  20. Bradley says:

No because children younger people are more vulnerable to bullies and older people.
But younger people can get more friends, play games and know more about different cultures.

  21. alex says:

It means you can contact family members more easily than just using contacts on your phone/mobile.

  22. ethan says:

I think that children should only have face book at the age of 16 because they can get bulled by people that you don’t know.

  23. Amelie says:

I think you should only be allowed on facebook if you are over 13 because then if you/someone starts to get bullied you can sort it out whereas if you are too young, then you might not know what to do!

  24. Keith Daniels says:

I think people under the age of 13 shouldn’t be using sites like facebook because there is a lot of cyber bulling going around the world.

  25. Sachi Mckoy says:

Children should only be allowed to have Facebook over the age of 18 because any person younger than that shouldn’t be exposed to the full dangers of the internet. Their mind can be twisted in so many ways, leading to depression, or, in even more extreme cases, to suicide.

  26. luke says:

I love technology because I like computers and I want to learn more about it and I like the Sphero and its connected to bluetooth on the iPad.

  27. Alistair says:

I think that it should depend on the maturity of the child as one child might be posting un-suitable posts on Facebook and another child might not.
